Hotchkiss Girls' Tennis Captures New England Championship

May 20, 2013

For the fourth time in five years, the girls varsity tennis team has captured the New England championship.

This year’s squad took the title in impressive fashion, dropping only four individual matches total over the weekend and beating Andover 7-2 in the championship match on Sunday, May 19.

In the finals, the Bearcats (17-0) swept the top four singles matches and all three doubles matches to conclude a second straight undefeated season.

The championship gives this year’s Seniors their third in the last four years, with Hotchkiss winning titles in 2013, 2012, 2010, and 2009.

Co-captain Brigitte Desnoes ’13 led the way, shutting out her Andover opponent at #1 singles, 6-0 6-0, and then pairing with Victoria Villalba ’15 to win the #2 doubles match 8-4.

For Desnoes, the match capped a four-year career that has seen the team post an overall record of 48-1 and win six tournament titles.

Fellow captain Emma Ractliffe ’13 also notched two dominating victories, winning 6-2 6-0 at #3 singles and then taking the #1 doubles match 8-1 with partner Lyndell Giffenig ’15.

The other singles victories were provided by Giffenig, who rallied to win at #2 singles 4-6, 6-2, 10-6, and by Kiki Warren ’14, who also needed three sets to win at #4 singles, 0-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Warren combined with Julie Sumski ’16 to win their #3 doubles match 8-6 for the final point of the day for the Bearcats.

The victory over Andover capped a weekend that saw Hotchkiss beat Kent 7-1 in the quarterfinals on Saturday morning and then move past Groton 7-1 in the afternoon semifinals.

It was the second tournament victory for the team this season, following their win at the Kent Invitational Tournament on May 11.

The boys varsity team’s season also ended in a New England championship match, but unfortunately the Bearcats (10-5) came up a little short against Andover, losing 2-4 on Sunday. The team won its quarterfinal match over Exeter 4-2 and its semifinal match over Taft 5-2 on Saturday.
