Cheshire Academy’s Emma Gailey ’14 was named by Max Preps/National Fastpitch Coaches Association as a Player of the Week today for her pitching prowess. Gailey hit a benchmark of 600 strikeouts in her career at the Academy in a game against Chase Collegiate School during an away game on Saturday. The 4-0 win gives this boarding school athletics team a 3-0 unbeaten record this season.
The coach’s association noted Gailey’s ability to strike out batters:
•Thirty-one strikeouts over 19 innings of work.
•Permitted just five total hits and struck out at least 10 in each of her three appearances.
•During a 19-1 rout of Greens Farms Academy, she went 3-for-3 at the dish with four tallies and four RBIs, while allowing just one unearned run and striking out 11 over five innings of work.
“I’m really proud of the team,” Gailey said. “During 8th grade, we had two wins and 13 losses. Last year we won the championship,” she said (the team took the Western New England Prep School Athletic Conference Class C Championship in May 2013). The Fighting Cats are on their way to repeating that feat this season, Gailey added.
Gailey has played softball since she joined a Simsbury Little League team. She said it takes a lot of extra work to succeed at the high school level. Gailey’s advice to younger players is to be confident and have fun. “You don’t want to be cocky, but you need to have control of the situation,” she said.
After reaching the 600 strikeout mark, Gailey is ready to up the ante. Her new goal is 700 strikeouts before the season ends. That means she will need to strike out at least 10 players in each remaining game.
