The recent run of success for boys varsity wrestling continued as Big Red claimed first place at the New England Prep Wrestling Championships on Saturday at the Hyde School. A year removed from finishing second at the meet, Exeter captured their third New England title in the past three seasons after out-dueling 46 other schools at the tournament.
The New England championship comes on the heels of Big Red wrapping up the third consecutive Class A title back on February 11th.
“The team overcame a lot of adversity with sickness and injuries to claim both the Class A and New England titles,” says head coach David Hudson. “Throughout both tournaments every wrestler contributed by scoring points – with most picking up bonus points along the way – and placing either at, or higher, than their seeds entering the tournaments.”
Big Red was led by captains Quinn Abrams ’17 (170 lbs.) and AJ Pedro ’17 (182), along with Hayden Brown ’19 (113), who each earned a pair of first-place finishes in their weight class at both tournaments.
Exeter will next aim its focus on the National Prep Wrestling Tournament hosted this weekend at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. This two-day event draws several of the top wrestlers and teams in the country. Brown, Abrams, Pedro and Kevin Lyskawa ’18 (145), all former place winners at the tournament, will be joined by Abhijay Bhatnagar ’17 (120), Tyler Morris ’20 (126), Josh Hemintakoon ’17 (132), Aidan Whitis ’17 (152) and Kelechi Nwankwoala ’17 (22).
