New Hampton School 2009 Division 2 Boys' Hockey Champions
New Hampton School's men's varsity hockey team beat Hebron Academy 3-2 to clinch the NEPSAC Division II Hockey Championship before a raucous New Hampton crowd at the Salem Icenter. The first period was a defensive battle and ended 0-0. Each team had several scoring opportunities but the goalies were not letting anything by. In the second period, New Hampton opened the scoring when Joe McCabe rifled a shot past the shoulder of the Hebron goalie from a Mike Young assist. The teams went into the locker room after the second period with New Hampton up 1-0. The third period was back and forth when Joe McCabe notched another goal as he stole the puck from a defenseman behind Hebron's net, bringing it in front, and putting it just past the goalie's glove. With 6 minutes left, New Hampton went up 3-0 when Preston Kaye sent a beautiful pass in front of the net to Kyle Zobler who put in the game winning goal. However, with New Hampton up 3-0 with about 5 minutes left, the game was far from over. Hebron scored two quick goals to make it 3-2 with a minute and half to go in the game. The Huskies were able to hold on thanks to the outstanding play of New Hampton's goalie, Pat Dunn, and the defensive contributions of Mike Tierney and Preston Kaye. The Huskies finished their season with a record of 17-6-5 and a Division II New England Championship.
2008 AVON OLD FARMS BOYS' ICE HOCKEY WINS NEPSAC DIVISION I TITLE
By Noah Sharfman
Salem, N.H. – Propelled by an overtime game-winning goal by senior Ricky Longobardi, Avon Old Farms School captured its seventh Division I Prep Championship in a 3-2 overtime win over St. Paul’s Sunday.
And in doing so it successfully defended its title from last year.
“The season was just domination, overall domination,” Longobardi said after his team’s triumph at The Icenter. “Both offense and defense; our goalies played well in the finals and you can’t ask for anything more from our team. These guys are going to be my friends for the rest of my life. I can’t really thank them more.”
2008 Kents Hill Boys' Ice Hockey Wins NEPSAC DIVISION II Championship
At the start of the 2007-2008 hockey season, Coach Larry Cockrell set four goals for the team to achieve. First was to win more than half of its games, second was to make it to Division II tournament, third was to make it to the semifinals in Salem, NH and fourth was to win the championship. Mission accomplished. After the Huskies beat New Hampton 2-1 in the final game at the ICenter in Salem, the team stormed the ice and mobbed goalie Brian Fleming who, with stellar goaltending, led the team in both semifinal game against archrival Hebron and the final against New Hampton.
