Tilton School Varsity Girls' Basketball Captures 2016 NEPSAC Class B Championship
Olivia Orlando '17 Named Tournament MVP
March 8, 2016 - Tilton, N.H - The Tilton School varsity girls’ basketball team captured the NEPSAC Class B Championship on Sunday afternoon, with a 62-52 win over Berkshire School (Sheffield, Mass). It’s the Rams’ third championship in four years and was the team's seventh consecutive trip to championship Sunday.
After breezing through their quarterfinal and semifinal match-ups against Williston Northampton and Lawrence Academy respectively, the Rams built a lead that grew to as much as 22 in the first half of the championship game. The Berkshire Bears would storm back before halftime, but the Rams would enter the locker room with a nine point lead, 40-31. While the two teams would trade buckets throughout the second half, Berkshire was never able to get within more than eight points and Tilton would eventually capture the crown with a 10-point final lead, 62-52.
Junior captain Olivia Orlando '17 (Georgetown, Mass.) was named MVP. She finished the day with 13 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists - her 20th double double of the season.
"The expectations for this year's team were simple: become a family and win a championship, in that order," said seventh year Head Coach and Tilton School Athletic Director Tara Brisson. "We quickly learned we could not do one without the other. This group never gave up, they kept fighting, and they kept improving, learning that anything is possible if you do it together. This resulted in another New England Championship for this program."
Tilton, who paced itself throughout the postseason with a stifling defensive game, received important contributions in the championship from Masey Zegarowski '16 (Hamilton, Mass., 12 points, 5 assists),
Mayson Kimball '17 (Webster, N.H., 10 points, 7 rebounds), Giulia Orlando '16 (Georgetown, Mass., 10 points, 6 assists, 3 steals).
The Rams finish the season at 22-6, as Lakes Region Champions for the seventh consecutive season and as NEPSAC Class B Champions. They will lose four seniors to graduation: Orlando (Merrimack College), Zegarowski (Bryant University), Gabby Hunter (Bedford, N.H., Dartmouth College) and Sophia Neubauer (Berlin, Germany, Bryant University).
"I can't thank this senior class enough," Brisson continued. "For their contributions that have made a lasting impression on this team, this program and this school, I will be forever grateful."
