Berkshire School Boys Skiing: 2017 NEPSAC New England Class A Alpine Skiing Champions!

The pinnacle of private school Alpine ski racing resides within the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council, in which the Berkshire School boys and girls' team compete.

On February 15th, The Berkshire Boys traveled to Mt Sunapee, New Hampshire to compete in the New England Class A Championships.  By and far, this was the youngest Bear's ski team to participate in the NEPSAC Championships, with the average residing in the 4th Form/10th Grade.

Wednesday morning found Mt Sunapee socked in with a bit of cloud cover, and the oppressive weight of impending snow.  The boys took to the GS, in which Lyons Brown '18 dropped the hammer on two runs to finish in 2nd Overall.  Lyons was followed by teammate Liam Carroll '19 who knifed two runs and took 6th Overall.  Rawson Clough '17 experienced a rough ride, yet had the perseverance, determination and athleticism to stay within the course to grab 13th place.  Gavin Kline '19 skied two solid runs and finished in 32nd Overall, while Peter Dunbar '19, who took a 12th in the first run, fell in the second and was knocked out of the race.  The top three individual results provided the boys with the Giant Slalom team win, five points in front of defending overall Class A Champions Deerfield Academy.

The afternoon witnessed snowfall that ranged from a few flakes to white-out conditions, as well as a short sprint of a slalom.

Not wishing to sit back and finish for team points, the entire boy's team made a conscious decision heading into the slalom to continue to ski to win in the pursuit of the NEPSAC title.  Leading the boys was co-Captain Lyons Brown '18, who crushed two tactical runs to podium in 2nd place Overall.  Lyons was followed closely by co-Captain Rawson Clough '17 who powered through two runs to grab 5th Overall.  Bookends Peter Dunbar '19 and Liam Carroll '19 clawed up to 14th and 15th place respectively in the Overall.  Gavin Kline '19 ran in the 5th spot for our slalom team, and skied his way to 26th Overall in the field of eighty boys.

Based upon all-out skiing, the Berkshire Bear's Varsity Boys grabbed the overall team win in the Slalom, and combined with the Giant Slalom team win, to become the 2017 New England Class A Champions!

The top five schools rounded out with Belmont Hill School, Suffield Academy, Northfield Mt Hermon, and in second place and defending champions, Deerfield Academy.  This win, marks the fourth time in the past seven years that Berkshire Skiing has captured the top award in NEPSAC Alpine Skiing.

Congratulations to the Berkshire Bears named to the 2017 All-New England Team;  Eva Clough,  MacKenzie Hatch,  Rawson Clough, Lyons Brown and Liam Carroll
