2011 NEPSAC Annual Award winners: Tom Blackburn and Brad Smith
The Martin William Souders Memorial Award
Established in 1967 in memory of Martin William Souders, Director of Physical Education at Milton Academy, 1919 - 1929, and at Phillips Exeter Academy, 1930 - 1962, and the first President of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council.

In recognition of his leadership, vision, dedication and the constant and valuable contributions which he made to the cause and stature of Physical Education and Athletics among New England Independent Schools.

To be awarded annually to a graduate of a New England Independent School who made a distinguished record in sports and who has since made a distinguished record in life through his/her ideals, leadership and accomplishments.

Thomas E. Blackburn is the 2011 Martin William Souders Award Winner. Tom is a 1952 graduate of Deerfield Academy. Tom spent much of his career at Worcester Academy. He was the Athletic Director from1973 to 1999. In addition to a stellar job in that office, Tom was also the Head Varsity Basketball Coach at Worcester Academy during his entire tenure at Worcester. Over the course of that time, his teams had an impressive record of 395-142 and won 7 NEPSAC Class A championships. Tom was also the Head Baseball Coach at Worcester Academy from 1974 - 1980 and 1985 – 1996.

Congratulations Tom and many thanks for your dedication and devotion to the ideals of sportsmanship and fair play.

Distinguished Service Award
To be awarded annually to the individual who has contributed significantly to New England Independent School Athletics and Physical Education through enthusiasm, dedication, leadership and vision.

Bradley Smith is the 2011 Distinguished Service Award Winner. Brad is the former Director of Athletics of Bridgton Academy in Bridgton, ME. During his time at Bridgton, Brad was heavily involved and deeply committed to NEPSAC. In particular, Brad served as the President of the District 4 Athletic Directors Association and was a key member of the NEPSAC Executive board; serving for numerous years as the NEPSAC treasurer and representing the NEPSAC body as President from 2004 – 2006.
Many thanks to Brad for his thoughtful dedication to NEPSAC.
