for the New England Prep School Girls' Ice Hockey 2009-2010 All-Star Teams.
Jillian Dempsey '09 of The Rivers School Presented With Bruins Award
Jillian Dempsey ’09 never imagined that she would one day be standing next to a living legend. And yet there she was, at TD Banknorth Garden on March 31, at center ice in front of 17,000 fans, receiving a prestigious high school sports award from none other than former Boston Bruins forward Cam Neely.
“They rolled out a red carpet and everything,” said Dempsey. “It was such a great experience and one that I will never forget.”
Noble and Greenough Girls' Hockey 2009 NEPSAC Divison 1 Champs
In a rematch between the top two teams in the ISL, Nobles and Lawrence squared off in the Division I Championship game on Sunday, March 8, and the Bulldogs emerged with a hard fought win, 4-1. This marks the fifth NE title in the past eight years for Nobles Girls Hockey. The Dawgs jumped out to a 2 goal lead in the first period behind the scoring of Kelly Cooke and Corey Stearns, both '09. Lawrence cut the lead in half in the second period but Nobles answered the challenge with its third goal (Cooke) on the next shift. In the third, Lawrence had a 5-3 advantage but were denied as Nobles killed that penalty situation. Still down one player, Michelle Picard '11 scored a short-handed goal that finished the scoring. Cooke was awarded the tournament's Most Valuable Player trophy.
Rivers' Jillian Dempsey Hits Summertime Ice, Plays For USA Hockey
For Rivers senior Jillian Dempsey, a lifelong dream has been to wear a red, white and blue jersey and step onto the ice to play hockey for her country. After years of drive, determination and diligence, Dempsey has made that dream a reality.
In late June and early July of this year, Jillian, along with eighty-eight other young women from across the nation, participated in try-outs for the Under-18 US Women’s Hockey Team. She was one of only twenty-two players selected to join the Under-18 team, which traveled to Lake Placid, NY for training from August 12th through the 23rd.
2008 Nobles Girls' Hockey Wins NEPSAC Division I Title
In a thriller, the girls varsity hockey team defeated Hotchkiss in overtime, 2-1, to earn the NEPSAC Division I title on Sunday, March 2. Nobles was trailing until late in the 3rd period when a goal by Denna Laing tied the score and sent the contest into overtime. Just under the first minute into the sudden victory OT, Kaitlin Spurling found the net and the Bulldogs celebrated in front of a large crowd. This is fourth title in seven years for the girls' program with the most recent in 2005.
