KUA Girls' Basketball Wins New England Prep School Title – Sunday, March 2, 2014
KUA 43 Hamden Hall 36
The third time proved the charm for the Wildcats, who claimed the NEPSAC Class C championship for the fifth time since 2000 after falling in the finals the last two winters. The top seed in the tournament, KUA (18-5) fell early victim to a foe with solid outside shooting and interior height (6'5" and 6'3") in a title game played at Noble & Greenough School (MA), Second-ranked Hamden Hall built a 26-14 halftime lead and extended it to 16 in the second half before Kimball Union mounted its come back. The Wildcats had the deficit down to seven with 10 minutes to play, three within the game's final four minutes and took the lead for good with 3:30 on the clock on a Miranda Judd 3-pointer. Tournament Most Valuable Player, Taylor Ong, led KUA with 13 points, adding key rebounds and running the offense due to a box and 1 stifling defense on Abby Kelly, to solidify Kimball Union's rally. Kelly (12 points) and Kaitie Sanders held the Hornets' prolific scorers to a combined three buckets on the afternoon while Judd gutted out the contest on a sprained ankle and chipped in with 8 points. Shannon Walsh and Kate Fowler did a nice job of keeping Hamden Hall's bigs off the boards. The team showed tremendous strength and courage coming back from double-digit deficits in both the semis and finals. The girls represented themselves and the school well all season long. With only one player graduating, the Wildcats are hoping to back in the hunt for another banner next March...More Information
