Hamden Hall Captures 2013 Class D Championship!

3/4/2013

Congratulations to the Girls Basketball team on their 43-38 victory over Lexington Christian Academy in the New England tournament championship final. On Friday night, the Hornets had defeated Southfield School in a hotly contested game 53-50, and in doing so, avenged last year's loss to Southfield in the final. The Hornets then set their sites on #2 seed Lexington Christian Academy for the final showdown on Sunday at Loomis in Windsor. Two years ago, the teams had squared off in the tournament semifinal, and the Hornets had come up short; so, like the Southfield game, this would be another chance for a payback. The Hornets tamed the Lions' attack in the opening frame, limiting LCA to just 11 first half points and grabbed a 10 point lead. The second half was much closer, as LCA cut the lead in half. However, Hornets kept finding ways to grind out the win. Senior captain, Krystina Reynolds scored 14 points, handed off seven assists and grabbed seven steals as well to earn MVP of the final. Rachel Plotke also scored 14 including three 3 pointers. Freshman Rachel Menze had a strong game down low, and chipped in 9 points; and Bianca Tomassini added 6 more to complete the scoring. Kaila DeFrancesco, Alyssa Devin, and Angelina Raffone were also solid at both ends of the court, limiting the productivity of the LCA guards.

Brimmer and May faced Falmouth Academy in the Class "E" Championship game and came away with the first NEPSAC tournament victory for any girls team in Brimmer and May history. The score was 33-23. The two teams had played each other once during the regular season. Falmouth Academy won that one by one point. Facing a significant height disadvantage, the Gators dug in on defense and focused on keeping scoring opportunities for Falmouth outside the paint. Their efforts were successful. Brimmer also created several fast break opportunities in the second half and with Falmouth Academy in foul trouble, the game started to tilt in Brimmer's favor.
